The God of Invitation.

38For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8: 38-39 NIV

There is no thing that we can refer to that compares to the love of God. We can see God’s love around us in moments and seasons, and we can grasp it for that period of time. But it is hard to gather a true understanding when there is no other relationship that is identical in nature. And I believe it is this exact reason why we need God to be near. We are designed to be loved!

God’s love is unconditional, He will never love you any more or any less than He does right now. It is not a condition that is determined by what you do or don’t do, that justifies His love for you. Whether you believe in His existence, or doubt who He says He is. He loves you regardless. This doesn’t make sense in the world we live in, because with the deep questioning of our value comes……Why do we deserve it? And the truth is, we don’t.

8But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! 10 For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!”

Romans 5: 8-10 NIV

God’s love is unfailing. It is a promise to us. Something that will never be taken away. There have been times in my life when I have received God’s love, but I knew deep down that I did not deserve it. When God’s presence was ushering me to seek His forgiveness, even when there was a lack of repentance. When my heart was proud and stubborn, and yet I was met with His loving open arms. It causes us to either get down on our knees and weep because of our actions, or turn away from Him, hardening our hearts and justifying our bad behaviour. It’s a choice that we make to receive His love, or to be proud in our own selfish desire and reject His love.

When I think of God’s love, I think of my daughter. What would it be like if she grew up rejecting me, pushing me away, saying she wants nothing to do with me. My heart would mourn the loss of her presence in my life. I could not force her to come back to me. I could not demand for her to listen to my plea with the desire to get her back. I could not make her run into my arms and find comfort in my presence. And that’s the love of God. He is not a God of force, He is a God of invitation.

28“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Matthew 11: 28-30 NIV

Of course I would reach out to my daughter. Of course I would send her gifts on her birthday. Of course I would pursue a connection with her, again and again and again. But if she wants nothing to do with me, what more could I do? God loves us so much that in His love for us, He gave us free will to decide on our own if we would love Him back, Or want nothing to do with Him. That’s love. True love. A love that is not corrupted by the laws of this world. A love that is pure without condition. A love without selfish ambition and self seeking reassurance. He loves without needing anything in return.

He loves…..because He is love. There is so much power in knowing that we are loved just as we are. God meets us in the darkest places and says, rise up Son or Daughter, and let me pour out my love onto you the way your heart truly desires. Nothing is going to fill you up like His love. And when you know His love, when you have experienced it for yourself, you can be His love to those around you.

He did not send His Son to die on the cross for us so that we would have shame or insecurities. Jesus died so that you and I could find freedom in His presence. True freedom to know what it means to be loved, exactly as we are without expectation. And in turn trusting in the truth of His word. There is no amount of money, no amount of fame, no amount of possessions that compares to the Love of God.

So receive His love…. Right in this moment. And find freedom in knowing who you are in Him and what He says about you. Get down on your knees and accept His love into your life, and be a mighty Son or Daughter of the Most High God.
